LOS ANGELES, July 3 (UPI) — Toyota is recalling 138,000 Lexus cars in the United States because of an engine-valve defect that could cause the vehicles to stall.

The valve springs on Lexus GS, IS and LS models made between 2006 and 2008 were “contaminated with an unidentified foreign material” that can cause engine noise and stalling. Lexus has issued the recall to replace the springs, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Toyota has recalled 8 million vehicles in the past year for problems ranging from sticky gas pedals to defective floor mats.

Toyota sales so far this year are the fewest of any major automaker, and the company’s market share fell from 16 percent to 15.1 percent in the first half of 2009.
