Panic-buying shoppers on Christmas eve is a welcome sight for many businesses operating in the retail industry this year./p>
According to research conducted by the supermarket group, Sainsburys, 13.3 million consumers will flood the high-street as the Christmas countdown draws to a close.
The findings suggest that almost one fifth of adults intend to do at least some of their Christmas shopping today, estimating an overall spend of a whopping £1.37 billion. The equivalent to £57 million an hour or £951,000 per minute.
It’s been stated that at least 7% of UK customer festive spending will occur on Christmas Eve. In addition to this at least 1.5 million people are intending on leaving 90% of their shopping to the last minute.
According to further research men are more likely to leave some, if not all, of their Christmas shopping until the last minute, with 19% stating that they will be doing some festive spending. However, at least 18% of the women questioned stated that they will also be making some of their festive purchases on Christmas Eve.
Despite this Sainsbury’s representative, Stuart McKeggie, believes that leaving shopping until the last minute is not necessarily a bad thing. He went on to add:
“In these prudent times, we believe people are looking at ways to stretch their budgets and take advantage of some great deals on the high and in supermarkets particularly.”
