SAN FRANCISCO, July 15 (UPI) — Twitter Inc., based in San Francisco, is celebrating the fifth anniversary of Twitter’s public launch.

On its Twitter page, Twitter provided some facts about its explosive growth. It said 224 tweets — a word then new to the language — were sent on July 15, 2006, a number now reached every 10th of a second or so.

Sixteen months after launch, Twitter had signed up 600,000 users. On Thursday, July 14, 2011, Twitter signed up 600,000 users in one day.

In five years, Twitter has become a tool for politicians and one that can bring reckless politicians down — as former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., discovered. It has also been used by earthquake victims in Haiti seeking assistance, and by protesters during the Arab Spring, MSNBC.com said.

In March, Twitter celebrated the fifth anniversary of the first tweet. Jack Dorsey, one of the co-founders, sent a two-word message on March 15, 2006: “inviting co-workers.”
