What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Jul 02, 2011  Posted by Admin in Business News | | No Comments »

There are many different types of business insurance that people in the United Kingdom can purchase, and in some cases are required by law to purchase. Professional indemnity is a policy that while it is not mandatory for you to have, depending on the profession you are in, it may be highly advisable that you carry it.

Anyone who works in a profession that provides financial advice, or guidance, to others in exchange for pay, needs to have professional indemnity coverage. People who are in the business of advising others on their financial concerns can be sued if a client believes they were given poor advice. The person who gave the advice can then be held accountable in a court of law for any damages or losses the client claims occurred because they followed this poor financial advice. This can mount into a lot of money very quickly, and even though people in this profession are generally very careful about the advice they give a client, the clients are not always honest people who play by the rules.

The client may suffer a financial loss, and rather than accept that they have gambled on the stock market and lost some money, they decide that suing their financial advisor will be a way they can recover some of what they lost.

New York revisits Merrill Lynch rescue

Jul 02, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

ALBANY, N.Y., July 2 (UPI) — New York State prosecutors said they were not done investigating Bank of America’s potentially fraudulent behavior when it purchased Merrill Lynch & Co.

A spokeswoman for New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office said the attorney general “remains committed to this case and is in the process of routine discovery,” The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

The federal government urged Bank of America to step in and purchase Merrill Lynch in 2008 in the same period that financial giants Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers went bankrupt.

Allegedly, Bank of America did not disclose what it knew about the depth of Merrill Lynch’s problems, holding back on full disclosure until after shareholders voted to approve the acquisition.

Schneiderman has issued new subpoenas to the bank and to former Chief Executive Officer Kenneth Lewis and former Chief Financial Officer Joe Price.

Shopping Responsibly Online

Jul 01, 2011  Posted by Joseph Ward in Business News | | No Comments »

The words “shopping” and “responsible” don’t always go together, but with a little effort and thought, there’s no reason why they can’t.

With the proliferation of internet shopping sites, has come an almost inexhaustible smorgasbord of online temptations. Endless daily deals and group buying offerings, html newsletters from your friendly clothing stores and loyalty programmes you may have unwittingly signed up to, and clever relevant product placement ads each time you go online. Just one click, and you’re on your way to owning another book or salad bowl set that you hadn’t set out to buy that day !

It begs the question – how to surf the web and sort through these attractive “must have” offers to get the best deal possible and to shop responsibly ?

Since the advent of the plastic credit card in the 1950’s, going shopping has been a delightful experience with virtually no connection to the reality of what it’s costing us (US researchers found that customers who use credit cards to purchase spend 112% more in-store than customers who pay with cash). Fast forward to 2011, we can now sit down at our computers at work, home or on the move (if you have an internet-enabled device) allowing us to conveniently shop online 24/7 – we can only begin to imagine how much more some people are now spending !

Never has there been a time in history that we can access so many shops with seemingly unlimited choice of anything we may wish for – all obtainable if you’ve got your credit card handy and with a few clicks of your mouse – you’ve bought it !

All this can spell financial disaster if you don’t keep a check on yourself or exercise a degree of personal discipline and responsibility. So what does it mean to shop responsibly ?

Responsible shopping covers a number of areas. To some shoppers, buying online from only New Zealand retailers or sellers (where possible) helps them feel that they’re supporting NZ businesses. Other shoppers will make all effort to purchase only “green” items, such as organic, fair-trade, from sustainable sources or where the seller commits to passing on a portion of their profits to a worthy cause etc. What I’m referring to as responsible here is, doing some homework online prior to purchasing, to confirm that the item or product is the best value in the current market and will it perform the task you’re intending to use it for.

One of the greatest tools to arrive with the digital revolution is comparison shopping websites. These sites aggregate products from a wide range of retailers and usually provide shoppers with latest prices, alerts on discounted pre-selected items, expert and user-generated product reviews and ratings and feedback from users on retailers they have shopped with. This enables an online (or offline for that matter) shopper to purchase a product with a higher degree of confidence that they are getting the best price and the best product for their needs.

In New Zealand, one such site is PriceMe. With over 400,000 products and prices to compare, you can establish very quickly which retailer is offering the best deal for almost any product. PriceMe also displays over half a million product reviews on the site, helping guide a shopper as to which product or particular model performs best or suits the purpose for which you want to use it. These sites are usually updated throughout the day so that shopping data is up to the minute, and shoppers don’t miss out on great discounted offers that may only be available for a limited time.

Shopping online is even more enjoyable if you’re armed with sufficient information that what you’re buying is great value and the right product for you. It’s worth taking a little time to do some pre-purchase search, then you can hit the “buy now” button with a lot more confidence and surety.

Happy (empowered and responsible) online shopping !

Emotional roadblocks that undermine management’s purpose

Jul 01, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

At The Fortune Group, we train managers how to fulfill their core purpose which is about creating a business that can literally function (and prosper) in their absence.

Central to making this work, practically and effectively, is ensuring that when employees are faced with a problem (of any description), we dont allow them to simply handball their problems up to us. Coach, guide and counsel them, but make sure you train them how to handle their own problems. Weak managers breed weak people! By strengthening people to solve their own job-related issues it allows us to remain focused on our business and job objectives and it also provides employees an opportunity to grow. Sure, they may struggle, but thats also how they learn!

Of course its easier said than done for managers to have their people deal with their own problems – some managers, wrongly, even see it as turning their back on employees in their time of need. Dont succumb to this emotional immaturity.

There are a couple of significant roadblocks that contribute to this internal emotional dilemma that many managers face. First is an emotional need to be needed. P

Driving business online at Hardware2U

Jul 01, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

In the first of the Driving Business Online case study series, Ballina-based online hardware store Hardware2U reveals how an excess of stock at Christmas led to it becoming an online business.

As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention, an expression that is certainly true for Scott Asbey-Palmer, founder of Ballina-based online Hardware store Hardware2u.

Asbey-Palmer had ordered plenty of stock for his bricks and mortar hardware store in December 2005, expecting a bumper Christmas trading season. But instead of the usual Christmas rush, sales were flat.

Faced with too much stock and bills to pay in January, he struck on the idea of selling the stock on eBay, and became one of the first online stores to start selling hardware on the site.

“The business has grown from there,” Asbey-Palmer said, who closed his bricks and mortar store in 2008 to focus solely on the online store.

Challenges

Asbey-Palmer says the biggest challenge is increased competition in the market.

“When we started, online shopping was in its infancy. We we

New pricing for SMBs to use Telstra M2M control centre

Jul 01, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

Telstra has released new prices for its Wireless Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Control Centre, making it more affordable for small to medium businesses looking to cut costs by using more automation.

The Telstra Wireless M2M Control Centre is an online portal managed with platform provider Jasper Wireless. Prices start at $3 per month and the offer is structured to service level, group and SMS bundle plans.

Telstra Business Executive Director Cathy Aston said the M2M Control Centre provides businesses with a more cost-effective way to manage their assets. She described the system as “a powerful ‘remote control’ that can save a business time and money by not requiring people to be physically present to perform a wide range of tasks”.

“Some sectors have been quick to recognise the benefits, particularly those in natural resources, agriculture and transport logistics; making great use of remote cameras and tracking devices,” she said.

The zero-touch activation is time and money efficient when a customer needs to deploy devices quickly. An installe

Go Daddy sold for $2.25 billion

Jul 01, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., July 2 (UPI) — Scottsdale, Ariz., Internet domain company Go Daddy Group Inc. says it has agreed to be sold to three private equity firms for $2.25 billion.

Go Daddy’s top executive said the buyers — KKR & Co., Silver Lake Partners and Technology Crossover Ventures — see room for Go Daddy to grow as a Web hosting and Internet marketing firm, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

“What these guys see is a company with a lot more potential internationally and more potential to make partnerships and acquisitions,” Chief Executive Officer Bob Parsons said.

“They’ll help us finance and they’ll help us recruit talent.”

Go Daddy sales grew 25 percent from 2009 to 2010 to $947 million. The company expects $1.1 billion in sales for 2011, the newspaper said.
