SMEs shun government information

Feb 25, 2011  Posted by Joseph Ward in Business News | | No Comments »

Managers prefer to do their own research when starting up rather than relying on information made available by the government, a study finds.

According to a survey by software company Sage of 1,510 UK businesses, just 14 per cent view business advice from the government as something they would depend on.

Less than a quarter of business owners (21 per cent) think the government is doing enough to provide sufficient support for those starting a business.

As a result, many have resorted to their own desk research to get the information they need, with 40 per cent of respondents relying on internet searches, while 34 per cent mostly look to newspapers, journals and magazines for business information and advice.

Paul Stobart, CEO of Sage Northern Europe, praises this hands-on approach. He says, ‘The resilience of SMEs in the UK is quite remarkable. Despite red tape, lack of access to capital, and a nervous economic environment, the SME is coming out fighting, determined to invest in and grow their business to fulfil their ambition. <

Newcon acquitted of fraud charges

Feb 24, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 26 (UPI) — A federal judge in San Francisco called a fraud case against Canadian military supplier Newcon International weak and has acquitted the company.

U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel scolded the U.S. Justice Department for pursuing the case with “several years of criminal proceedings notwithstanding the paucity of evidence.” She also said prosecutors, who filed charges in December 2007, had switched tactics during the nine-day trial, depriving Newcon of the right to defend itself against the charges for which it was accused, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

Newcon was accused of lying to the Defense Department about an offer made to American Technologies Network to pay it to relinquish a contract for supplying night goggles to the Army.

The company was accused of using the scheme to increase prices.

Newcon had been the Army’s supplier for night goggles, but lost the contract to ATN in 2004.

But the judge said there was no evidence to show Newcon lied and the price could not have gone up as the principal contractor, a Jordanian company called ITE, had already signed a fixed-price contract for the goggles.

Newcon attorney Jonathan Howden said the case had “a devastating effect” on the company.

China may cut import, other taxes

Feb 19, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (UPI) — China may cut import duty and consumption tax on items such as cosmetics and milk powder to check their imports through agents or other ways, officials said.

Officials are concerned such “unusual import methods” could result in loss of several billion yuan in tax revenue annually, Shanghai Daily reported quoting China National Radio.

The radio report said the State Administration of Taxation wants to cut consumption tax on cosmetic products and eliminate it for gold and jewelry to bring down the prices of imported products and promote domestic consumption.

Purchases through overseas agents totaled about $1.8 billion last year, the report said. These agents are able to charge lower prices as the products are brought in personally without paying duty or other administrative costs.

Imported cosmetics, which are much in demand in China, currently are subject to more than 50 percent import tax.

Imported milk powder is also in demand after the 2008 melamine contamination scandal.

Two out of three Australian small businesses don’t have a website

Feb 18, 2011  Posted by Shannon Cox in Business News | | No Comments »

Consumers are increasingly comfortable buying goods online yet Australian businesses are lagging behind the trend, according to research by the MYOB Business Monitor that found 65 percent of businesses dont have a website.

We’re witnessing a major shift in Australian buyer behaviour from in-store tyre-kicking to savvy online bargain hunters. The market is changing and we encourage business owners to act to make the most of the new conditions, because their competitors are no longer just in their local area,” said CEO of MYOB, Tim Reed.

The findings also revealed that businesses established for more than 10 years are less likely to have a website (25%) than maturing (32%) or new (36%) businesses.

He said over Christmas more shoppers went online and the strong Aussie dollar made purchasing from overseas sources more attractive, while the rapid uptake of smartphones is also increasing the volume of search traffic to providers of goods and services with websites.

Many people now use their smart phones to search for suppliers, compare the best deals and organise home delivery because it’s easier,” he said.

But for a small business juggling a range of different priorities, is having a website built really worth the investment of time and money?

According the survey findings, the short answer is: yes.

Thirty percent of businesses with a website reported their revenue had increased in the past 12 months, compared with 23% of businesses without a website.

Survey reveals promising future for manufacturing

Feb 15, 2011  Posted by Joseph Ward in Business News | | No Comments »

Improving demand for UK-made goods has boosted manufacturers’ expectations for output growth, according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).   Responding to the latest Industrial Trends Survey, 28 per cent of manufacturers say that export orders are above normal, and 17 per cent say they are below. The resulting net balance of +11 per cent is the highest since July 1995.

In line with improving demand, manufacturers’ expectations for output growth have strengthened, with 37 per cent predicting an increase, while 14 per cent expect a fall, giving a balance of +23 per cent.

CBI economic adviser Ian McCafferty says, ‘With expectations for output growth at their strongest since before the recession, the recovery in the manufacturing sector remains well on track, and the sector should continue to make an important contribution to broader economic growth.’
