Correcting your credit report errors takes some time, but if you know how the process works, you will find that it will be a breeze, rather than going in with blindfolds on.

Your credit report is a very important part of your personal financial information.  This is going to determine loan rates, mortgages, and more.  If you don’t have a good score, you’re going to have a hard time getting just about anything.  This is why it’s important that you fix your errors, so that they don’t come around to haunt you.

Step 1:  Make sure that you have a legit credit report

You will want to make sure that you have a legit credit report.  Every year, you’re entitled to a free credit report.  You can’t get your score, but you can read it over.  You can start the process here, http://www.ftc.gov/freereports.  Look it over and highlight the errors for future reference.

Step 2:  Start writing a dispute letter

While you can call the credit reporting companies, as well as e-mail them, this isn’t going to work.  You’re going to want to send out a credit dispute letter.  In the past, I wrote about “How to write a credit dispute letter.”  You can read that to get a better idea on how to write one.

Step 3:  Gather up the evidence

Make a copy of the evidence on why this is an error.  If you have paid the bill, copy your check, as well as a copy of a bill.  The more evidence that you have, the better it is for you.  Make copies of everything that you send them for your own personal file.

When the credit bureaus receive all of this, they are going to forward all of the evidence to the creditors.  If the creditors agree to the dispute, it will be wiped clean, but 99% of the time, they will fight it if the evidence is sufficient enough.

Step 4:  Send via certified mail

When you send out the letter, make sure that you send out the letter via certified, so that you know that they received it, since they will have to sign for it.

The process shouldn’t take that long and as long as you have everything written up, you will find that you won’t have any troubles.  Be sure to follow the steps provided above, write a good dispute letter, and let’s hope that those errors disappear.
